How to stay warm this winter with a cheap vacation

vacationBY ALEX RUSSELL

A significant part of America has been experiencing single digit temperatures (or worse) every day for a few months now. Everyone’s made all the “snowpocolypse” and “Chiberia” jokes you can stand and it’s time to get away from those people.

The only way to escape and experience some form of respite is to go on vacation. There are plenty of helpful guides about how to actually book your trip (suggested Google search: “how+to+book+cheap+vacation+without+dying+house+of+cards”) but it can be tough to know which island is for you.

You need an iPhone!

iphoneBY MICHAEL CAHIILL

The iPhone: the undeniable representation of the average under-30 American. Ever since some guy in a black turtleneck unveiled a block-like device with touch capabilities back in January 2007, the business, technology, and communication industries have never been the same. The iPhone was a revolutionary contraption that fused together the internet, a music player, a phone, and many other technologies into one pocket-sized device.

Video Breakdown: John Parr’s ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ videos are great

john parrBY SCOTT PHILLIPS

One of the best things about television’s marriage to music is seeing live performances of songs. This is especially true of the ’80s and in this case, John Parr.

“St. Elmo’s Fire” is probably a better song than it was a movie and when you watch these videos of John Parr completely crush it with his trademark American guitar, the song becomes even better. The movie is still mediocre, though.

Mixtape Masters: D Rose’s high school mix is ridiculous

derrick roseBY SCOTT PHILLIPS

As many of you know, I’ve covered high school and college basketball since my college days and I spend a lot of time watching mixtapes of top players.

Mixtapes are a collection of highlight-reel plays that are put together to music by dudes that obsessively follow certain players.

And this week’s high school mixtape of Derrick Rose is ridiculous.

‘Draft Day’ tied to real Browns by name only

Draft_Day_poster

BY TROY PHILLIPS

Sonny Weaver Jr., that’s the name of the general manager of the Cleveland Browns in the upcoming film Draft Day.

It’s not  Michael Lombardi or Ray Farmer, it’s Kevin Costner, playing a fictional GM who is portrayed as the head of a competent front office, which should be your first hint that this film is not based on a true story.

Don’t write “Draft Day” off as a loser, at least not yet. Continue reading

The Last Second Guide to Writing a Tired Post About Valentine’s Day

broken heartsBY ALEX RUSSELL

Love stinks, right?

That’s one way to go with your Valentine’s Day post, for sure. No matter if you write for a personal blog or a national column, this week if you’re in the business of talking you have to talk about Valentine’s Day. What else are you going to talk about, the Olympics? Name six people in the Olympics. Do it. Name any that aren’t Shaun White.

Trick question! No one’s at the Olympics. Those are just an obvious ploy to give lonely hearts something to talk about this week rather than think about the greatest, loveliest day of the year!

Confessions of the college selection process: beware campus visits

Chen_CollegeVisitsBY TROY PHILLIPS

Early this week, I completely flipped my college shortlist on its head. After a few conversations with a close friend and a general lack of direction as to where I would take my (limited) talents post high school, I decided to make Bradley University my leading destination, despite the fact that I had never even given it a second thought until a few days previous.

And that got me thinking; I’ve been doing this college search crap for a long time. Let me tell you, it’s a convoluted, over hyped process that I no doubt completed in a disorderly, half-assed fashion, but either way I’ve learned a few things that are worth sharing. This week, I cover the college visitation process, which has a far more positive reputation than it should.
