A buzzing crowd of thousands teeming with anticipation simultaneously become hushed. The lights in the arena fade to black. The first note of a song resonates through the sound system accompanied by a coordinated pyrotechnic show. A legion of loyal fans erupts with a chorus of cheers. They get their first glimpse as the performer enters the stage and they completely lose their shit.
The aforementioned scene is something that happens in a different city almost every single night of the year. It isn’t a rock concert either. This is the entrance of one of your favorite WWE superstars.
If you are actually taking the time to read this, it should come as no surprise that many of us here at Poor Scholars have a natural disposition towards professional wrestling and over the course of the next few months we will be taking some time to breakdown some of the most iconic entrances and theme songs in WWE history. Our main focus will be on the various iterations of song choices WWE superstars such as Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels and even current superstars such as CM Punk, have made throughout their illustrious careers. While focusing on their choice of theme music, we will also bring up things like their entrance video, pyrotechnics and modes of entrance.
For our first ever edition of wrestler theme songs and entrances, we are going to review an all time classic: none other than the Heart Break Kid himself, Shawn Michaels.
Special Note: We aren’t going to cover his entrance when he was a member of The Rockers because frankly I don’t remember those days. Also we are leaving out his entrance during his DX days because that is going to be a completely different entry.
Sexy Boy – Shawn Michaels
When Poor Scholars editor Scott Phillips approached me with this idea, the theme song that I immediately thought of was that of Shawn Michaels.
“Sexy Boy“ really is the quintessential wrestling theme song. From the ’90s guitar riffs to the female background vocals repeating “sexy boy,” this song has it all. Lest we not forget the biggest reason HBK has one of the all time greatest entrance songs, HE SINGS HIS OWN ENTRANCE MUSIC!
I think I’m cute.
I know I’m sexy.
I’ve got the looks,
That drive the girls wild
I’ve got the moves, that really move ’em.
I send chills up.
Up and down their spines.
I would have included the rest of the lyrics for you to marvel at, but all you needed to take away from Shawn’s rough, raspy voice attempting to let you know he’s just a sexy boy is that “Sexy Boy” paved the way for future WWE superstars like John Cena and R Truth to sing their own entrance music. It is actually so terrible that it’s good. He set a gold standard for wrestlers who feel empowered enough to actually record their own theme song.
